Lunch Ticket Prices for 2008-09

You have no doubt felt the impact of higher prices on your own grocery bills. The same is true for Hawthorn food services. In an effort to keep pace with costs and continue to provide quality food service to our students, it was decided to increase meal ticket prices beginning this fall. Student breakfast will be $1.20, student lunch will be $2.20 and milk will move to 40 cents a container. Staff meals will also increase. You can get ahead of the game by purchasing tickets this summer at the District Office, 841 West End Court. The office is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

PTO Contributes More than $97,000 to Schools!

Thank You! The Hawthorn PTO has turned in another amazingly fruitful effort on behalf of our schools and students. This year, the PTO contributed more than $97,000 in cash, books, programs and communication services. The cash disbursements are divided on a per capital basis to each of the six Hawthorn schools and the John Powers Center. The schools will use these funds for educational enhancements for the 2008-09 school year. These funds typically fund important "extras," such as educational assemblies, subscriptions to classroom publications such as Time for Kids, assignment notebooks and field trips. More details are provided on PTO Distribution letter and a description entitled Where Do the Funds Go. The Hawthorn PTO has an amazing history of support for our students. Thank you to the PTO leaders and the hundreds of volunteers who support the efforts of this incredible group!

Looking Ahead on the 2008-09 Calendar

As you plan ahead for next year, keep in mind that the first day for students in grades 1 through 8 will be Monday, August 25, with Kindergarten students starting the following day. The weeks prior to school's start also include lots of important orientation opportunities. Get Your Middle School Sports Physicals This Summer

Attention parents of incoming 6th, 7th and 8th graders who are interested in participating in the athletic programs for next year. To avoid confusion and mixups during the athletic season, we encourage all students to get their sports physicals completed during the summer. Physicals are required for all students trying out for sports. Physicals are valid for one calendar year. To avoid an expired physical during the school year and missing out on an important tryout date, please take care of your physical during the summer. FREE sports physicals as well as general school physicals and immunizations will be available through the Kids First Health Fair on August 6 at Miquel Juarez Middle School in Waukegan and the District 76 Health and Community Services Fair on August 16 at West Oak Middle School in Mundelein. For more information, download the Health Fair fliers.

Are Your Student Records Current?

Parents are reminded that it's important to stay up-to-date with your student's records, particularly your physical and dental exams. This is especially important for our students moving on to high school or transferring to other schools. In fact, if your records are not in order the new school has the right to refuse your enrollment. Schools can also hold report cards and exclude students from school until records are in compliance. (Note that a new Illinois law now also requires eye exams for incoming Kindergarteners or First Graders, or students transferring from out of state. Schools will be contacting families directly with more information.) For more information, contact your school nurse.
