Inclusion on this page does not mean that Hawthorn endorses any of these programs. Rather, we are simply passing along information. All information presented here must be associated with organizations that are local, non-profit, and open to all of our student community. Hawthorn has the right to refuse to post any item that does not meet these criteria and may limit the amount of time it is posted to two weeks. Important Information about Pertussis

The Illinois Department of Public Health reminds families of the dangers of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, which is making a resurgence as people neglect to get properly vaccinated. Please read the IDPH’s September 2 letter and contact your doctor for more information.



Mundelein Park District Youth Basketball Leagues

Cougar Community 5K Run for Glaucoma Research - Oct. 3

The Health and Wellness Committee at VHHS invites you to take part in the Cougar Community 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, October 3 at Big Bear Lake in Vernon Hills. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m., and the race starts at 9:30 a.m. More information is available on the race brochure. To register, visit http://vhhscougars.org.



Attention Middle Schoolers - Enter the CFPD YouTube Safety Video Contest!

Countryside Fire Protection District invites Hawthorn middle schoolers to make a safety awareness and prevention video. Winning videos receive prizes such as a new digital video camera for their school, American Express gift cards, and more. (Last year, several student groups in Dennis Matuch’s class at Hawthorn Middle North took home several top prizes!) Afterschool Enrichment Program Fall 2010 Registration Info - Classes Start September 13

Hawthorn has partnered with the Vernon Hills Park District to provide high quality, cost effective after school enrichment opportunities in each of our elementary buildings. This fall’s courses include Mad Science, Sunshine Arts & Crafts, Young Rembrandts and CheckMate Chess Academy. Classes are open to all Hawthorn elementary students and meet right after the final bell. (Participants may be required to bring a note on class day showing that they will not be getting on the bus after school; check with your school.) FIrst Session classes start the week of September 13. Second Session is scheduled to begin in late October. VH Lady Cougar Basketball Tryouts - Oct 19 & 25

Vernon Hills Lady Cougars feeder basketball program tryouts are planned for Tuesday, October 19 and Monday, October 25 at Vernon Hills High School. Check-in both days at 6:30 p.m.; tryouts from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The feeder program is for girls in grades 5 through 8 who plan to attend VHHS. O’Hare School of Irish Dance Open House/Free Class - Sept. 23

The booster club of the O’Hare School of Irish Dance invites interested dancers (age 4 to 18) and a parent to visit a dance class for free. The local free class is set for Thursday, September 23 from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Lake Bluff Park District, 355 West Washington, Lake Bluff. Check Out the CLC Fall Youth Classes

The College of Lake County offers a wide variety of youth classes, including many at the Vernon Hills Southlake Campus as well as online learning opportunities. Information is also available on the registration forms for traditional youth courses as well as the online Ed2Go courses.



Law Enforcement Expo - Sept. 11 & 12

The Vernon Hills Police Department will hold the 6th Annual Law Enforcement Exhibition on September 11 and 12 at Westfield Hawthorn Mall. Visitors will get to see specialty equipment, demonstrations and officers from area agencies. The department will even set up the Firearms Training Simulator (FATS), an interactive video training tool, in an empty storefront near the upper level Macy’s entry. Police K9 demonstrations are planned for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday at center court. The police helicopter is scheduled to be on hand in the Sears parking lot beginning at about 2 p.m. on Saturday, depending on weather and workload.
