Attention Girls (and parents) in grades 7 through 12: The College of Lake County encourages you to attend Girls STEM Day on Saturday, February 25 from 8 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. at CLC (C Wing Auditorium C005, 19352 West Washington Street, Grayslake). You’ll get to experience FREE fun, hands-on science, technology, engineering and math sessions and receive informative career advice from successful women and men scientists and engineers. Free light breakfast and lunch, plus a mini college fair featuring several four-year institutes. Parents can also attend their own STEM program. The event is FREE, but pre-registration is required. Get ready to boogie! The Central Lake YMCA right here in Vernon Hills is polishing up the disco ball for a Disco Date Night on Saturday, February 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 at the &, 700 Lakeview Parkway, Vernon Hills. The event is for dads and daughters, moms and sons, as a way to spend some fun time together. Cost for YMCA members is $5 per couple and includes dinner, dessert, dancing and limbo for two. Attention kids in grades 4 through 6: Learn to play bridge! Class will meet for an hour on a couple of Saturdays, followed by a tournament. Classes are at 1 p.m. on January 28, February 4 and February 11 at Cook Library. Tourney is on February 18. More information is on the poster or online at http://www.cooklib.org.
Beginning with enrollment for fall 2012, any child entering 6th grade must now show proof of receiving one dose of Tdap (defined as tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last DTaP, DT or Td dose. Students entering grades 7 through 12 who have not already received Tdap are required to receive one Tdap dose regardless of the interval since the last DTaP, DT or Td dose. As further reminder, children entering 6th grade need to have a physical (Illinois Child Health Exam form) and a dental exam (Illinois Dental Exam form) and parents must also provide Proof of Residency

The North Shore Teen Center (also known as The Apartment) works to develop independence in teens with special needs by providing them with a safe, supervised and social environment that promotes skills for a balanced and healthy life-style. Youth in grades 5-12 and their parents are welcome to drop by and check out the various programs, including teen clubs, daily living activities, academic times, sports sessions and more. Our own Hawthorn students play a role in several events, including the Choir Fest on October 13, the Band Fest on November 1 and the Orchestra Fest on November 16.
