Registration Info

Attention families with students entering Kindergarten for the 2010-11 school year:The Kindergarten Registration Process will begin with an important Parent Information Meeting on Thursday, January 28 beginning at 7 p.m. at Hawthorn Middle South, 600 N. Aspen Drive, Vernon Hills. During this meeting you'll learn about the registration process, schools and Hawthorn Kindergarten Experience.

Children who turn 5 by September 1, 2010 are eligible for Hawthorn Kindergarten during the 2010-2011 school year.

Kindergarten registration for the 2010-11 school year was due at the District Office, 841 West End Court, Vernon Hills by February 18, 2010.

If you have not yet registered your incoming kindergarten student (or incoming 1st grade student), please do so by coming to the District Office between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on days when school is in session. Note that once the student is registered, they will be scheduled for a diagnostic assessment. Assessments for students interested in Dual Language will take place in March. Assessment for other incoming kindergarten students will be scheduled for May. Welcome letters indicating the school where your child is enrolled are expected to be mailed from your school on April 19, 2010.

Who Needs to Register?

  • Students new to Hawthorn District 73: The enrollment process requires an in-person visit to the Hawthorn District Office, 841 West End Court, Vernon Hills. The items required for registration are outlined later in this webpage.
  • Incoming Kindergarteners: Children who turn 5 years of age on or before September 1 are eligible to attend Kindergarten during that year. (For example, children turning 5 by September 1, 2010 are eligible for Kindergarten during the 2010-2011 School Year.) The enrollment process requires an in-person visit to the Hawthorn District Office, 841 West End Court, Vernon Hills. Kindergarten registration also involves a diagnostic screening. Kindergarten walk-in registration for the 2010-2011 school year will open on February 8 and conclude on February 18.
  • Students already enrolled in Hawthorn Schools: Each spring, parents are asked to verify and update information on each student and submit fees for the following year. The 2010-11 continuing registration process is expected to take place in May 2010 with a new online process. Details about that process will be provided prior to the May online enrollment season. Beginning with the 2009-2010 school year, families of all continuing students entering Grade 3 and Grade 6 are also required to verify residency.

In Person Registration Process

Registering a new student in Hawthorn District 73 requires that a parent or guardian appear in person with documents verifying residency in District 73 as well as information pertaining to the student being registered, as outlined below.

Residency Verification

State Law (105 ILCS 5/10-20.12b, 105 ILCS 5/14-1.11a and additional) requires that students attending District 73 be residents of the district. Generally, a student must live with a parent or legal guardian who resides within our district and possesses appropriate custody documents. At the time a student is first registered with the district, a parent/guardian must appear in person to provide documents showing proof of residency. (Guardians/custodial parents must provide current legal documents outlining the custodial agreement.)

Note that beginning with the 2009/2010 school year, families of continuing students entering Grade 3 and Grade 6 will also be required to verify residency. District 73 may require any student to prove residency at any time.

In general, Hawthorn requires three types of documents to verify residency:

  • One item must be a photo identification card (Illinois driver’s license, state-issued ID card, etc.)
  • One item must be a mortgage document, rental agreement or the like
  • One item must be a supporting document showing name and address, such as a property tax bill, gas bill, homeowner/renter insurance policy statement, vehicle registration card, public aid/medical card

Student Registration

In addition to verifying residency, the parent/guardian must also provide documentation related to each student. Please refer to the complete registration packet, which is available at District Office.

In general, Hawthorn requires the following documents to register a student:

  • State-issued birth certificate (hospital certificates are not acceptable)
  • Child's social security number, if available
  • Small photo of child to be kept at school
  • Pediatrician's name and telephone number
  • Names and telephone numbers of two local emergency contacts
  • Daycare and sitter addresses and telephone numbers, if applicable
  • Fee payment - see below.
  • Students transferring from another school district are required to provide an Illinois Transfer Letter as well as a copy of the student's latest report card.
  • Proof of Physical Exam/Immunization: Parents should provide a recent physical form showing appropriate immunizations in order to enroll all incoming Kindergarten students, students entering 6th grade, and students transferring into the District. Students entering 5th grade must show up-to-date vaccines.
  • Proof of Dental Exam: The State of Illinois requires that students in Kindergarten, 2nd and 6th grade have a dental exam on file.
  • Proof of Vision Exam: The State of Illinois requires that students entering school in Kindergarten (or grade 1) or transferring from out of state have a dental exam on file.

Fees

Fees for the 2009/10 and 2010/11 School Year:

  • $43 for Kindergarten/PreK/SEDOL/Early Childhood/Special Services
  • $47 for grades 1-5
  • $87 for grades 6-8
  • $55 for Band and Orchestra students in grades 5-8
