Summer School
Hawthorn District 73 offers three summer learning opportunities:
- Hawthorn Enrichment Institute 2008 (HEI), a multi-disciplinary enrichment program with classes covering everything from ceramics and cooking to math games and computer skills. Sessions run Monday through Thursday mornings from June 11 to July 2 and July 7 to July 24 at Middle School South. Registration is available by contacting Jan Greene at Aspen Elementary during the school day, or sending an email to greenej@hawthorn73.org. - Hawthorn Music Camp 2008, a mix of lessons, group performance and fun for band and orchestra students with at least one year of experience. Program times are 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. from July 21 to August 1 at Townline Elementary. Camp concludes with a final concert scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday, August 1. - Jump Start Summer Scholars, a grant-funded program designed to boost students' core skills and help them transition into the fall schedule. The program will run from July 28 to August 15 with students attending on Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Sessions are held at Middle North, Middle South, Townline and Elementary South, with Aspen students attending at Elementary South, and Elementary North students attending at Townline. Students entering 6th grade in the fall will attend at their Middle School. Students will be grouped with their own classmates and work with teachers from their school. Invitations were sent in April 2008.

HEI Session I: June 11 to July 2 (starting and ending on a Wednesday to accommodate the July 4th holiday). No classes on Fridays.
HEI Session II: July 7 to July 24. No classes on Fridays.
Class Times: 8:30 to 9:25 a.m.; 9:30 to 10:25 a.m.; 10:30 to 11:25 a.m.
Location: Hawthorn Middle School South, 600 North Aspen Drive, Vernon Hills, IL
Ages: For children entering grades 1 though 8 in the fall. Select classes based on child's grade next fall.
Registration Round-Ups: This year, parents can register in person at Registration Round-Ups, which allow you to walk away with your questions answered and a schedule in hand. Round-Ups held at Aspen Elementary, 500 North Aspen Drive, Vernon Hills at the following times:
- Wednesday, February 20 (District Residents, only) – 6 to 9 p.m.
- Saturday, February 23 (District Residents, only) – 2 to 5 p.m.
- Saturday, March 8 (Open Registration) – 2 to 5 p.m.
- Wednesday, March 12 (Open Registration) – 6 to 9 p.m.
- Saturday, April 19 (Open Registration) – 2 to 5 p.m.
- Tuesday, June 3 - Session I Enrollment Closes
- Wednesday, July 2 - Session II Enrollment Closes

ACE Volunteer Program: Students who have graduated from 8th grade or beyond are eligible to become members of the Academic Counselor of Enrichment (ACE) Club, assisting and mentoring young learners. This year's HEI program also includes opportunity to attend the new Leadership Seminar. More information is available in the 2008 HEI Registration Brochure.
Red Rose Children's Choir of Lake County: HEI is pleased to welcome guest educator Sharon Augsburger of the Red Rose Children's Choir of Lake County. During Session II, HEI vocalists will combine with members of the Red Rose Choir for a tremendous choral experience. For information about the Red Rose Choir, visit www.rrcchoir.org. Be sure to listen to the group perform.
