Superintendent

Thank you for your interest in Hawthorn School District 73. As your Superintendent of Schools, I am honored and excited to work with all of our Hawthorn stakeholders to achieve our mission to “Ensure learning for all.”

Serving a diverse population of approximately 4,200 students (pre-K through eighth grade), our focus is on providing a world class, whole-child education with equitable opportunities for all students.

The District consists of nine schools, including an early childhood center, kindergarten building, four elementary schools, a dual language school and two middle schools. We serve all or portions of the communities of Vernon Hills, Mundelein, Libertyville, Indian Creek and unincorporated areas of Lake County, Illinois.

Hawthorn District 73 is recognized locally, as well as statewide and nationally, for its outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements. In 2019, Elementary South received the coveted National Blue Ribbon Award in the Exemplary High Performing Schools category. Middle School North is a recent recipient of the “Whole Child Award” from the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Hawthorn is among a small group of school districts in Illinois that received a Best Communities of Music Education Award from the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. We offer extensive athletic and after school opportunities for students with more than 80 clubs and sports activities.

This is such an exciting time for the District. With the passage of a bond referendum in 2018, we are moving forward with significant renovation and expansion plans. In addition to the opening of our new kindergarten building in 2020, we recently finished expansion of Middle School North, and began construction on the expansion of Elementary South. We are proud that all Hawthorn schools are slated for improvements, which will provide students and teachers the space and technology they need for 21st century learning. Finally, the District adopted a new Strategic Plan in 2021 to guide future decisions.

If you are a Hawthorn parent or family member, please consider supporting the Hawthorn PTO, the Key to 73 Foundation, communicating with your child’s teachers regularly, attending school events, and keeping up to date with the district by frequently checking our district website and our social media channels, which include Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (see links below).

We are proud of our students, staff and schools and welcome the opportunity to share additional information with you. I encourage and welcome any questions, comments or concerns you may have by contacting me at hanniganp@hawthorn73.org.

“Go Eagles!”

Sincerely,
Dr. Peter Hannigan
