Last Thursday was a momentous night for Hawthorn District 73’s middle schools. Members of the Board of Education and Administration presented certificates to approximately 450 students at the Middle School North and South Class of 2017 promotion ceremonies. Parents had plenty of reason to be proud. More than half of the students at both schools were recipients of the Hawthorn Academic Award for maintaining a 3.5 GPA (7th grade through T2 of eighth grade), and more than 40 students were recipients of the Presidential Academic Award for maintaining a 4.0 GPA (for seventh and eighth grade).
Taking place at Vernon Hills High School, the events highlighted the talents and strengths of the schools. The Middle School North Ceremony included performances by the Middle North Orchestra and the Middle North 7/8 Grade Chorus, and presentations by Principal Robert Collins, Superintendent Nick Brown, School Board member Jeff Bard and Student Council President Gavin Gilfand. The South ceremony included performances by the Hawthorn Middle School South Chorus and Hawthorn South Eighth Grade Band and presentations by Principal Robert Natale, Superintendent Brown, School Board President Sonali Patil, and Student Council President Aditi Ram.
In his address at both ceremonies, Superintendent Brown gave advice to students about the high school years ahead of them. He encouraged students to be kind to everyone they met, to not be afraid of failure, to try new things, and learn every day.
“Hawthorn District 73 has enjoyed having you as students,” he said. “Be bold, and be your best. We’re very proud of you.”
At the conclusion of the ceremonies, parents and friends met the students with hugs and cheers. Celebration and excitement filled the gym.
