Hawthorn Board Highlights - Oct. 21, 2021 Meeting

Thank you to the staff members from Hawthorn School of Young Learners and others who attended the Hawthorn School Board meeting on Oct. 21, 2021. At the meeting, the Board heard a presentation on substitute teacher compensation and voted on several actions, including bond issuance and copier purchases.

During Public Comment, representatives from Vernon Hills Park District spoke to recognize Hawthorn’s partnership and contributions in helping them earn the coveted 2020 National Gold Medal Awards in Parks and Recreation. In reciprocation, the Board of Education offered its own recognition of the strong partnership between Hawthorn and the Park District and awarded them a Hawthorn Recognition Brick.

Director of Facilities Mike Labbe and his dedicated team also were recognized by the Board for their tireless work in maintaining and beautifying our facilities. The Recognition Committee shared that a community member had reached out to the Board to commend Mike’s team for the job they did handling a landscaping project. Individuals can be nominated for recognition on the Hawthorn Recognition Nomination page.

Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Adam Palmer presented a recommendation to the Board to increase the daily rate for substitutes from the current $102 per day to $120. Additionally, the recommendation would decrease the number of days needed to begin earning the Long-Term Rate from 26 days to 15 days, and make the Long-Term Rate retroactive to the beginning of the assignment. The Board will vote on this recommendation at the next meeting on Nov. 16.

Up for vote at the meeting were several items, including a resolution to issue the final $15.5 million in bonds from the 2018 referendum, a copier purchase & service agreement, an update to the SOPPA Student Data Privacy Policy, and an update to Policy, PRESS Issue 107. All four items were individually voted and approved by the Board by a 7-0 vote.

The next board meeting will take place at the District Office on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021.
