Hawthorn Highlights - September 8, 2022 Meeting

The Hawthorn District 73 Board of Education met on September 8, 2022, for its second meeting of the 2022-2023 school year. Below are the highlights.

The Board of Education had the pleasure of honoring 16 Hawthorn students for earning a spot at the IESA State Track Meet in spring 2022. Additionally, the Board recognized John Casey, Technology Support Specialist, who was nominated for recognition by a building administrator.

Discussion Items:

During Discussion, the Board heard an update on the tentative timeline for construction at Hawthorn Elementary North. At the September 22 Board of Education meeting, the Board will be presented with the final design and development plan for approval. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in June 2023.


Superintendent Dr. Pete Hannigan thanked the Board and staff for their support and hard work to make the beginning of the school year such a success. He reported that the new playground at Elementary South and Aspen Elementary was completed on Friday, September 2, and opened to students on Tuesday, September 6.

Lastly, Dr. Hannigan provided a very positive update regarding transportation for the start of the school year. Thanks to adjustments made by our transportation team this summer, we have had minimal delays or disruptions in transporting our students to and from school. We look forward to rolling out the Ride 360 app tomorrow, September 9, for kindergarten students at Hawthorn School for Young Learners and Hawthorn School of Dual Language.

  • The Board approved the FY22 teacher and administrator compensation summary.

  • The Board approved the 2023/2024 Budget Calendar and persons to work on the 2023/2024 Budget.
