Hawthorn District 73 uses the PowerSchool Parent Portal to digitally post report cards and progress reports for both our middle and elementary school families. Benefits to posting report cards via this secure portal included more timely reporting to parents, as well as easy parent access to both current and past report cards. Online report cards are also environmentally friendly.
The purpose of report cards is to communicate student progress toward mastering learning standards. Grade level bands have similar report cards (Preschool, Grades K-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8), and all report cards separate a student’s academic achievement from their work habits. That is, the report of how well a student has mastered learning standards is different from scores reflecting their work habits.
Hawthorn also distributes midterm reports for elementary students participating in intervention support and services at the midpoint of each academic trimester. While these reports are less detailed and narrower in scope than the report cards, they provide a snapshot of how students are progressing.
Report cards and midterm reports are only one way student progress is communicated with families. Information is also shared via conferences, phone or email, feedback on assessments and assignments, standardized assessment reports, and more.

As you may know, the State of Illinois released its newly updated Illinois School Report Card today. This report card is aligned with our nation’s federal education law, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The Illinois Report Card indicates how public school districts and individual public schools have performed on a wide range of educational goals at the school, district and state levels.
Traditionally, to assess each school’s progress toward meeting ESSA goals, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) identifies academic indicators (such as Illinois Assessment of Readiness and Illinois Science Assessment scores) and school quality indicators (such as student absenteeism and climate survey results) to use as measures of success. Due to the continued national health crisis, a number of metrics are currently unavailable for this initial release of state report cards. ISBE has indicated that state assessment results will be added to the district and school report cards as they become available throughout the 2021-22 school year. Additional data, such as information on chronic absenteeism and chronic truancy, was collected but may have been affected by the suspension of in-person learning. Because of this, please use caution when interpreting results and trends.
Historically, schools are ranked based on their scores across all indicators, with special attention given to the performance of specific student subgroups (such as economically disadvantaged students, students with disabilities, and English language learners). This comparative ranking is then translated into the school’s “official designation” for the Illinois School Report Card. However, due to the continued health crisis, summative designations for schools will not be calculated for the 2021 Illinois Report Card.
While we value each of the measures included in the Illinois ESSA Plan, Hawthorn District 73 uses a variety of standardized assessments to determine how well we are meeting the academic needs of our students. We also consider each student’s progress in daily learning activities and classroom-based assessments to develop a more complete picture of our academic performance. In addition, Hawthorn District 73 strongly values the development of the whole child. Students’ social and emotional growth, participation in athletics and other extracurricular programs, involvement in the fine and performing arts, service-learning efforts, and other positive contributions to our school and district community are all essential components of our success.
